What About The World Cup!
- Jim Sim
Summer is almost over and it's been a real treat this year to have the world cup here in the USA.
As part of our summer vacation Sari & I were able to enjoy a real treat in Florida. While visiting family we were able to spend a day in Miami with lots of fans from different countries and especially with the Tartan Army (if you don't know what that is, I can't help you).
And there is more; I was able to fulfill a lifetime dream and go to a game; Scotland v Brazil.
I have wanted to go to a world cup since 1978 and it has been 28 years since Scotland even qualified. Needless to say it was a long time coming and it was worth it for lots of reasons.
There was lots of laughing, singing, sunshine etc. and I made a few observations that got me thinking, so here it is.
The singing, along with the emotion on show, from all sorts of people was moving and at times really quite inspiring. Inspiring to worship God, believe it or not.
I was not impressed with all the songs being sung, but then I'm not a fan of all the songs we sing in church either. That isn't my point, song choices have more to do with personal preference than anything else.
The level of passion, commitment, and full throttle volume on display, especially at national anthems was really stirring. You could see en-masse that fans were unabashed in emotionally, vocally, & financially supporting the cause of their nation. Their undivided loyalty was obvious, loud and at times fun and other times, aggressive.
I don't want to tar every fan with the same brush and call it all idolatry, but I came to conclude that the desire to worship and express your soul from a deeply personal place, is embedded into us all.
I have seen parallels in church. Loud singing, laughter, tears, money being offered (it's not cheap at the world cup), camaraderie and unity among those of the same persuasion & I made new friends from total strangers.
I joined in on almost all of it and without labeling anyone else and their motives, I came away thinking that my worship could do with a bit more gusto.
Why tame it down? - soccer fans don't.
Why mumble while singing? - soccer fans don't.
Why keep my hands in my pockets? - soccer fans don't.
You see where I am going?
Jesus deserves my undivided heart, my full throttle allegiance, my best!
If you're saved and you know it; clap your hands!
Always for Jesus,
Jim.
